An SMSF works like any other super fund, but you’re in control of every decision – from setting up the fund, appointing trustees and establishing the trust deed, to registering with the ATO and managing contributions or rollovers.
As a trustee, you choose how the fund is invested across assets such as shares, property, fixed-interest or collectables, provided everything aligns with your SMSF’s written investment strategy and complies with superannuation law.
Trustees are also responsible for administration, record-keeping, ongoing compliance and arranging the annual audit, and while this level of control comes with added responsibility, many find it rewarding with the support of an experienced SMSF accountant.
